Oriental Rugs

More and more people are becoming interested in Oriental carpets, also called Oriental rugs. The Oriental rug has ancient traditions and rugs were around in prehistoric times. The oldest rugs were flat woven and had no pile. They were smooth like Kilim or Soumak rugs.  We know this from archaeological excavations of the Egyptian Pharaohs’ burial chambers. A knotted rug was found that was approximately 2.500 years old during excavations in the Altai mountains near the border of Mongolia. It is 6’4” x 6’3” almost square and is known as the Pazryk rug. It is made with Turkish Knots. The pattern consists of a central field broken up into small squares that is surrounded by four borders. The first border has continuous moose with antlers, the second border with an hourglass design, followed by a border with horsemen and the outside border with stylized animals. Most of rug was in good condition when it was discovered.  There is a picture carved in stone from Persepolis that is over 2000 years old showing an ambassador presenting a rug as a gift to the Persian King. Ancient writings refer to rugs found in palaces and temples in most oriental countries. Now you don’t have to be royalty to own an oriental rug.Today there are hand knotted, hand crafted, and machine made reproductions available to everyone. You can have a similar design and style delivered to your door. Rugs are considered as an important part of furnishings in the home. 1001arearugs.com  has in stock a wonderful selection of oriental design rugs. Please check us out. I have purchased 2 great rugs from 1001arearugs.com in the past year. Most recently a Sphinx Oriental Weavers which is phenomenal. It took me 2 tries to get the Sphinx right, but your return service was remarkable. I am completely satisfied with your customer service, competitive prices, speedy delivery and great products. I will highly recommend you to anyone looking for a rug. I was initially very nervous about purchasing an item like this via the net. But you have put my fears at ease. I will be a lifetime customer. Thanks for everything. And I’m not kidding — every time I look at my Sphinx - it’s like WOW!

Thanks again,

Sue  from Altona, PA

Our Accent Rugs Will Floor You

Like a colorful kerchief tucked into a blazer pocket, area rugs can give a colorful snap to a roomfull of furnishings. Whether you lay a rug atop a floor that’s already carpeted  or clad in wood, your area area rug can serve as a rooms star or as an important supporting player.

*Let a rug set a palette. Finding the right rug isn’t easy, so if you find a rug you love, consider making it the first element you choose for your room. Then make everything else fit around the rug’s color.

*Enhance an existing color scheme. If you’ve already furnished the room, choose an area rug that pulls together the dominant or accent colors. In a roomful of busy fabric patterns, consider a solid-color rug with contrasting border.

*Make it a focal point. If you want a rug to be the center of attention, choose one with bright colors-in the richest values of hues in the rooms pallate-and strong contrast between the colors within the the rug’s design. Also consider shapely variety: A round rug in a roomful of square furnishings can make a bold statement.

*Define furniture groupings. One of the best uses of an area rug is to pull together a conversation group. By touching all of the furniture in the group, the rug will visually knit an area together, creating intimacy and drawing the eye. Rug size matters here; seating pieces in an ideal situation should either be all on or all off the rug. However this is not always possible.

An area rug will create an impression.
