What is a hand tufted rug?

February 3, 2008 by marvin801

Hand tufted rugs can be some of the thickest plushest and heaviest types of area rugs.

They begin with a drawing on canvas of the design that shows what and where the colors are going to be tufted.

The correct colored yarn is then inserted through the canvas with a tufting gun that has a needle with the yarn running through the eye of the needle.

The tufting gun is guided by a person that is skilled in this process.

The rug is then put through a shearing machine that smoothes and evens out the pile.

A secondary canvas backing that locks the yarn in place is attached to the primary canvas back.

The edges of the rug are hand finished with over cast stitching.

A good quality tufted wool and silk rug like the Nourison 2000 Collection and Nourison 3000 Collection can be as beautiful as hand knotted wool and silk rugs that sell for five times the price.

Wrinkled area rugs and what to do about them

January 31, 2008 by marvin801

For rugs that wrinkle on top of wall to wall carpeting:

This usually happens when a rug is put on top of wall to wall carpeting. The wall to wall carpeting under the rug is too soft and the pressure from walking on it causes the rug to wrinkle up.There are special area rug pads (Super Move Not and Tiger Grip) that are made to go on the wall to wall carpeting. These pads may not be a permanent solution. You may periodically have to straighten the rug.

For new rugs that are wrinkled:

There is a possibility that there be could some wrinkled areas of your new rug.
Please note, this not a defect.
The rug has been bounced around in the shipping and handling.
Here are some of the best ways to smooth out a wrinkled rug.
You can spray a mist of some water on the top and back of the rug in the wrinkled areas.
The moisture will relax the pile and the wrinkles will come out overnight.
You can reverse roll the rug in the opposite direction and leave it overnight.
You can use a hair drier on a low setting to soften the area.
Please be patient, eventually the wrinkles will come out in time with normal use.

Wool Rugs

January 27, 2008 by marvin801

Wool is considered to be the standard of the rug industry. Wool is the most resilient fiber. Wool is a fiber that is lot like the hair on your head. You can test for wool by burning. It will smell like hair burning if it is wool. Certain types of sheep are raised for their wool. Worsted wool is carded (combed) to obtain the longest fibers. The longest fibers are bundled together and then spun and twisted and then plied with one or more spun and twisted bundles. There are single plied, double plied, triple plied, twisted wool bundles that make different qualities of yarn that are woven into a rug. The length of the fiber and the quality of the wool can make a big difference in the wear ability of a rug. Most wool rugs will shed and fuzz especially when new. The higher quality of wool that has the longest fibers will shed far less than poor quality wool. Thus all wool rugs are not all the same.

Oriental Rugs

January 25, 2008 by marvin801

More and more people are becoming interested in Oriental carpets, also called Oriental rugs. The Oriental rug has ancient traditions and rugs were around in prehistoric times. The oldest rugs were flat woven and had no pile. They were smooth like Kilim or Soumak rugs.  We know this from archaeological excavations of the Egyptian Pharaohs’ burial chambers. A knotted rug was found that was approximately 2.500 years old during excavations in the Altai mountains near the border of Mongolia. It is 6’4” x 6’3” almost square and is known as the Pazryk rug. It is made with Turkish Knots. The pattern consists of a central field broken up into small squares that is surrounded by four borders. The first border has continuous moose with antlers, the second border with an hourglass design, followed by a border with horsemen and the outside border with stylized animals. Most of rug was in good condition when it was discovered.  There is a picture carved in stone from Persepolis that is over 2000 years old showing an ambassador presenting a rug as a gift to the Persian King. Ancient writings refer to rugs found in palaces and temples in most oriental countries. Now you don’t have to be royalty to own an oriental rug.Today there are hand knotted, hand crafted, and machine made reproductions available to everyone. You can have a similar design and style delivered to your door. Rugs are considered as an important part of furnishings in the home. 1001arearugs.com  has in stock a wonderful selection of oriental design rugs. Please check us out.
