Wool Rugs
Wool is considered to be the standard of the rug industry. Wool is the most resilient fiber. Wool is a fiber that is lot like the hair on your head. You can test for wool by burning. It will smell like hair burning if it is wool. Certain types of sheep are raised for their wool. Worsted wool is carded (combed) to obtain the longest fibers. The longest fibers are bundled together and then spun and twisted and then plied with one or more spun and twisted bundles. There are single plied, double plied, triple plied, twisted wool bundles that make different qualities of yarn that are woven into a rug. The length of the fiber and the quality of the wool can make a big difference in the wear ability of a rug. Most wool rugs will shed and fuzz especially when new. The higher quality of wool that has the longest fibers will shed far less than poor quality wool. Thus all wool rugs are not all the same.
